Weinstein Company Signs on for Fraggle Film

According to Variety, The Weinstein Company is planning to bring Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock to the big screen. The Henson Company has been actively working to bring the Fraggles back in an all-new feature film for several years. The film, based on the original story treatment developed by Ahmet Zappa, will be helmed by writer/director Cory Edwards, who is currently writing the screenplay for the Fraggle film. Producers on the project include Brian Henson, Jason Lust, Lisa Henson, Ahmet Zappa, and Brian Inerfeld.

The film, produced by the Jim Henson Company and distributed by the Weinstein Company, will take the Fraggles - Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober and Red - outside of their home in Fraggle Rock and into the human world.

Details on MINDStyle's Fraggle Figures

As reported earlier, MINDStyle is planning to release a series of Fraggle Rock vinyl figures in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock. Everyone at MINDStyle is excited about the project and they have enthusiastically sent me some more detailed information about what consumers, collectors and fans can expect.

MINDStyle plans to unveil the Fraggle Rock anniversary figures at next week's Toy Fair in New York (February 17-20, 2008). Each figure will measure about 3 to 4 inches tall and will come with a special building block. Each of these blocks has different letters of the alphabet on them, so with several figures you'll be able to spell out words or names with the Fraggle blocks. Unlike action figures these collectible figures will be sold blind boxed, not blistered. So there will be a sense of collectorship associated with the series. Also in this way, there will be some unique and secret chase figures released as well.

The initial publicized line-up will include: Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober, Red, Uncle Traveling Matt, The Trash Heap, Sprocket, King Gorg, a Fraggle, and the Doozers.

Dark Horse will be the worldwide distributor for the series, and the figures should be obtainable through most retailers of Dark Horse products. While the exact sales price will vary from vendor to vendor, you should be able to get the figures for under $10.

The Fraggle Rock 25th anniversary collector series is coming, and you'll want to be sure to start collecting these exciting figures as soon as they hit store shelves. I'll be sure to keep you updated with more details, and pictures, as soon as they become available.

Final Fraggle Rock Season Coming to DVD!

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of Fraggle Rock - the first episode debuted on HBO on January 10, 1983. The show ran for more than 4 years, spawned 96 episodes, produced more than 150 original songs, and inspired and entertained an entire generation of fans. In 2005, The Jim Henson Company and HIT Entertainment partnered to release the complete first season in a deluxe box set loaded with hours of bonus features. Seasons two and three followed with equally impressive sets in 2006 and 2007, and now fans are waiting to discover what the fate will be for the final episodes of this beloved show and their DVD collections.

Well, the Jim Henson Company and HIT Entertainment are planning to release the final 24 episodes of Fraggle Rock in a deluxe season box set later this year. That’s right Fraggle fans, the "Fraggle Rock - Complete Fourth Season" DVD box set is coming!

A representative from HIT Entertainment informed me earlier this week that the fourth season is tentatively lined up for release in "Fall 2008". Details on the specific disc specifications and bonus features are not available yet; however I've been told that a new batch of interviews and other behind the scenes content is currently being worked on for the set. I've told to expect a detailed announcement sometime this summer (and given the past timelines of when such information surfaces, it would be likely be around June or July).

This DVD box set will include the final 24 episodes of the series. Whereas HBO had stretched the 96 episodes of Fraggle Rock into 5 broadcast season (of 24, 24, 22, 13 and 13 episodes respectively); Henson had produced and filmed the series in 4 evenly sized seasons of 24 episodes each. HIT is following the production seasons with these sets, and I have been told that all of the remaining episodes will be included on this final set.

With this release fans will finally be able to complete their collections and own every episode of this beloved series. I will be sure to keep you all posted as soon I hear anymore on this highly anticipated "Fraggle Rock – Complete Fourth Season" set (due to hit stores in "Fall 2008").

The Muppets Reign at TV DVD Awards

The winners of the 2007 TV-DVD Award have been announced. The awards recognize the best releases of TV shows on DVD in the past year. Studios submitted their top DVD titles for consideration in the 18 TV-DVD categories. The titles were then rated by expert judges, and their ratings were tallied. The top TV-DVD titles in each category were then listed on an online ballot and voted upon by consumers. After much calculation and deliberation, the winners were announced and the awards presented.

"The Muppet Show – Season 2" won two awards – one for "Best 1970s Television Show" and a second for "Best Children's Series" (although many Muppet fans will argue the show is not just for children). Additionally, "Fraggle Rock – Complete Third Season" won the award for "Best 1980s Television Show".

"Dinosaurs: The Complete Third and Fourth Seasons" was also nominated for "Best Children's Series" (but lost in the category to "The Muppet Show").

Previous TV-DVD Award winners include "Dinosaurs: The Complete First and Second Seasons" (2006 winner of "Best Children's Series"), "The Muppet Show: Season One" (2005 winner of "Best Children's Series") and "Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars" (2005 winner of "Best Miniseries").

Congratulations to all of the 2007 TV-DVD Award winners! Thanks to all the fans who voted for their favorite DVD, and a special thanks to the producers who made these great DVD products a reality for us to own and enjoy.

Henson Collection Moves to Atlanta

The Henson family and the Jim Henson Foundation have announced that they are donating a large collection of Jim Henson artifacts — everything from hundreds of original puppets to sketches and artwork — to Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts.

The 29-year-old center will house between 500 and 700 Henson pieces in a wing named for the beloved puppeteer as part of a new building scheduled to open in 2012. One of the original Kermit the Frog puppets is already on display at the center, and a series of smaller exhibits from the larger collection will rotate through the center until the new space opens. In September, the center will get Rowlf, Swedish Chef and Dr. Teeth puppets as part of an exhibit focusing on the characters that Henson operated himself. The center also will display characters from "Sesame Street", "Fraggle Rock", "The Dark Crystal", "Labyrinth", "Sam and Friends", and other Henson works.

"People will be able to come to Atlanta and immerse themselves in the life and career of Jim Henson in a way that cannot be replicated anywhere else," said Vince Anthony, founder and executive director of the center.

The Center for Puppetry Arts was offered the Henson Foundation archive because of its long history with the Jim Henson Company. Jim Henson cut the ribbon at the center’s opening in 1978 alongside Kermit and Miss Piggy (dressed as Rhett and Scarlett), and the center’s collection already includes the Pigs in Space from "The Muppet Show."

The institution is "the prime center of puppetry arts in the country and really has been for a long time," said Eileen Blumenthal, a professor of theater arts at Rutgers and author of the book Puppety, a World History.

Cheryl Henson, co-CEO of the Jim Henson Company and daughter of Jim Henson, stated in a press release that: "We are delighted the Center for Puppetry Arts will make it possible for the public to see and experience the full breadth of this extraordinary work that reaches across generations and countries to touch everybody."

Feel free ot visit puppet.org for more information on the Center for Puppetry Arts and this momentous and Muppetational gift.

Fraggle Season Set Episode Confusion

On Thursday I shared the details of the upcoming "Fraggle Rock – Complete Third Season" DVD box set. One detail that sparked questioning from many fans (my inbox was flooded with inquires) was the fact that the information from producers stated that the set would include "24 episodes". Now as any fanatical Fraggle fan will tell you, the third broadcast season of Fraggle Rock (which aired on HBO in 1985) was comprised of only 22 episodes.

Whereas HBO bundled and aired the 96 episodes of Fraggle Rock in 5 season groupings (of 24, 24, 22, 13 and 13 episodes respectively); Henson had produced and filmed the series in 4 evenly sized seasons of 24 episodes each. It was later that HBO decided to shuffle the episodes around to artificially stretch the material into an additional season.

I contacted a representative at HIT Entertainment about the issue of the DVD sets' episodes and here is their direct response:

"We are releasing the sets by production seasons, not by broadcast seasons. Season 3 will have 24 episodes."

So the information was accurate, this third season set will include 24 episodes - the 24 episodes produced in the third season (listed below). The set will be coming out on September 11, 2007 and will be loaded with all new featurettes, interviews and other bonus features. So with the upcoming third season DVD box set that leaves only one more season (the 24 episodes of the fourth production season) left to be released. I'll keep you posted with more information on the third, and hopefully fourth, seasons of Fraggle Rock on DVD.

     Episode Listing

  1. The Bells of Fraggle Rock
  2. Red-Handed and the Invisible Thief
  3. Boober and the Glob
  4. The Grapes of Generosity
  5. Blanket of Snow, Blanket of Woe
  6. Pebble Pox Blues
  7. Home Is Where the Trash Is
  8. Believe It or Not
  9. Wembley and the Mean Genie
  10. The Secret Society of Poobahs
  11. The Beanbarrow, the Burden and the Bright Bouquet
  12. Gobo's School for Explorers
  13. Scared Silly
  14. The Great Radish Caper
  15. Born to Wander
  16. The Battle of Leaking Roof
  17. Playing Till It Hurts
  18. Bored Stiff
  19. The Cavern of Lost Dreams
  20. The Incredible Shrinking Mokey
